Creative Connections Opening Ceremony
Collaboration: Having to do with working together, especially in a literary, artistic or scientific production or project; the act of working together; the act of aiding or cooperating traitorously.
In September 2010, a group of literary and visual artists met at the Galley at the Centre with the idea of collaborating with each other to stimulate new ideas; i.e., a writer might respond to a visual artist or a painter might respond to the written word to create a new work. After each artist talked about what subject matter interested them, the style in which they liked to work, and the medium they preferred, it soon became apparent who would work well together. Artists got together after that initial meeting to discuss possibilities and come up with ideas. Would the writer respond to an image or would the painter respond to the words?
The result of this creative interaction can be seen in the lobby of the Civic Centre until Feb.5th.
It has not only resulted in exciting work but has also fostered some new relationships with artists. At the opening on Jan. 14th, each pair talked about the process of working together and the public responded with an appreciation for the explanantion behind the work.
When looking at these Creative Connections, the viewer may decide to read the words first and then look at the artwork, or vice versa. Either way, the combined work represents one common effort.
